At the old picturesque village of Lefkimi, one of the largest villages of the area until the beginning of the 20th century, dominates the beautiful and impressive church that is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and is the trademark of the settlement.
Its construction started in 1900, during the Turkish occupation, and its inauguration took place on the 8th of September 1902. It belongs to the type of the three-aisled, wooden-roofed basilica, without a dome, with an elegant bell tower over the entrance. Its architecture is, generally, frugal but remarkable. Its walls are traditionally built with stones, from the famous craftsmen of Lefkimi, which have given the characteristic form to the monuments. Impressive is the façade, with the triple-light window over the elaborate entrance, while the large areas of the walls have a more light aspect with the two series of arched windows. The interior of the church is decorated with icons from the beginning of the 20th century, the remarkable works of important painters from Andrianoupolis and the wider are of Thrace.
The church celebrates on the 8th of September.
