Excursion at Sounion

One of the most beloved and well-known sites of Attica, at its southernmost edge, in Sounion.

At the top of the promontory stands the famous temple of Poseidon, god of the sea, which is visible from afar as one approaches Athens from the sea. It was built in the 5th century BC over the ruins of an older temple, while at a lower location there was a fortress, a sanctuary of the goddess Athena, and the port.

At the area of Sounion you can swim and eat in picturesque taverns, but the visitor can be compensated by the route there, since it crosses the whole coast of the Saronic Gulf passing through beautiful beaches and tourist resorts.
