A Walk at Koroni
On the southern edge of the Messenian Gulf the amphitheatrically built Koroni seems to have two different faces. A calm one, with the landscape of the colored houses and the picturesque waterfront and the beautiful little taverns and another one, harder one, with the harsh beauty of the stone of the castle that dominates on the edge of the peninsula.
Together with Methoni, Koroni was fortified by the Venetians in the 13th century. The Castle combines gothic, Byzantine and Ottoman elements. For the visitor the enchanting view to the bay is combined with the tall mountain tops of Taygetus. Filled with olive trees the area of Koroni is famous for its excellent quality olive oil.
