The impressive palace was constructed by the Princess of Austria and Hungary Elisabeth, known as “Sisi”, and then it was purchased by the German Kaizer Wilhelm II, to be used as a summer residence when he visited Corfu.
Achilleion is located on the mountainous village of Gastouri, ten kilometers southwest of the city of Corfu. It is one of the most well-known royal mansions in Europe and, perhaps, the most important architectural site of the island. At the mansion’s courtyard one can admire the statues, inspired by ancient Greek mythology, of the “Seven Muses” and of “Achilles Dying” by Herter. Furthermore, in the courtyards there are also excellent busts of ancient Greek writers and orators.
