Dovecots

The dovecots, genuine creations of folklore art, can be found all over the island, creating an impression to the visitors of Tinos.

In the beginning of the 13th century the Venetians started to breed pigeons on the island in order to use them as a means of communications. The first recorded dovecot of the island is mentioned at a document of the 18th century, but it is almost certain that this type of buildings pre-existed.

Nowadays, more than 1000 dovecots have been recorded in Tinos, which astound visitors with their size and their elaborate designs. Triangles, squares, suns and other stone ornaments decorate the external walls of these buildings. Using a material that is abundant in Tinos, the slate, the local craftsmen manages to create true architectural marvels, which will surely enchant visitors.

In 1984 a relevant issue Official Gazette by the Ministry of Culture established that all dovecots are works of art and are under its protection
