The modern, social and economic history of Kavala is closely related to the cultivation, packaging, storing and trade of tobacco. The Tobacco Museum was founded in 2003 based on the long history of tobacco cultivation in Kavala, but also in the wider area of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
This is a thematic museum unique in Greece. Its showcases exhibit artifacts and archive material, related to the whole cycle of life and promotion of this agricultural product and particularly of the eastern varieties that were produced in the area.
The museum is divided into seven thematic units, dealing with cultivation, processing, exhibits, tobacco trade, tobacco-workers and their unions etc., while it is worth mentioning that large part of its material is digitized.
