Bougatsa of Serres
The bougatsa, one of the most tasty and favorite food in Greece, is identified with Serres and is always a sweet temptation for the visitor of the city. It arrived in Greece together with the refugees from Asia Minor and became rather popular here and in Thessaloniki. The name comes from the Turkish word “pogatsa”, which mean pie stuffed with cheese or stuffed with cream and sprinkled with sugar. Nowadays, the bougatsa of Serres continues to be made in different variations, but according to the old, traditional way, with homemade crust, in family workshops that can be seen in every corner of the city.
