At the Pyli of Trikala, near the church of Porta Panagia, is the beautiful stone bridge of the river Portaikos. It dates from 1514 and tradition relates it to agios Vissarion, metropolitan of Larisa and founder of the nearby Monastery of Dousiko.
Its location, at the entrance of the natural passage from Thessaly to Pindos, made it especially important for the communication of these areas and until 1936 it was the only crossing of the river. Nowadays, it is one the best know sights of the area, and around it they have created special areas under the platanus trees, cafes, and parking lots.
