The cave of Theopetra has particular importance for the prehistory of the whole Europe, since it has been inhabited continuously from the Middle Paleolithic period to the Neolithic period (130.000-3.000 BC). It is located 3 kilometers far from Meterora, on the road Kalabaka – Trikala, on the one side of the impressive calcareous rock that rises near the community of Theopetra.
At its interior rare findings have been unearthed, like stone tools, jewels from oysters and a unique one of gold, from the Paleolithic period, traces of fire, a woman’s burial from the Mesolithic period (approximately 7,000 years old), and human footprints, which probably belonged to children.
