Every visitor of Tinos should admire one of the most impressive geological phenomena in Greece, at the plateau of Volax, at the centre of the island.

There are numerous, great round rocks of granite scattered all over the area.

There are some theories that try to explain this rare geological phenomenon. Some propose that these rocks were once at the bottom of an ancient sea. Others support that there are the result of a meteor hitting the Earth, but according to the most prevalent theory, these large symmetrical rocks of granite came from the eruption of a prehistoric volcano, which has been found several kilometers away.
