Tegea, the most important ancient city of Arcadia, was located near the modern village of Alea, at the area of the church of Palaia Episkopi. Tegea also had the most important sanctuary of Arcadia, dedicated to Athena Alea, from which today survive only the ruins of the marble temple, that have been designed by the important sculptor Scopas.
From the ancient city they have unearthed state buildings, temples, part of the agora and the theatre, under the church of the Dormition. The findings from the excavations of Tegea and its long history are presented in detail at the beautiful, modern, renovated Archaeological Museum of Tegea.
