In the area around the Monastery of Malevi, in Kynouria, is the unique Juniperus Phoenicea cedars forest in Europe, which has been declared a preserved natural monument and is protected by the Natura 2000 network.
The Juniperus Phoenicea or Syrian juniper is a rare species, endemic in Eastern Mediterranean and can be encountered only in Syria. In spite of this, it is characteristic of the flora of Parnon and in the specific location is seen in a unified area of 740,000 m2. At the same forest other rare plants have been recorded, which confirm the unique character of the environment in this territory.
