Theophilos Museum

At a suburb of Mytilene, Varia, the birthplace of one of the most important folk painters of modern Greek art is the Theophilos Museum.

The building was erected in 1964 with the expenses of famous art publisher from Mytilene, Stratis Eleftheridis (Teriade) which a year later he donated it to the Municipality of Mytilene together with 86 paintings of Theophilos, from his private collection. The Museum is built with stone from the island and blends harmoniously with the olive grove which surrounds it. The works of Theophilos that are exhibited in the four halls of the museum drew their inspiration from history, mythology and folklore, everyday life and tradition.
