At the foothills of mount Akoumaro is located, amphitheatrically built, the picturesque city of Gytheio. Most of its buildings are built in neoclassical style, while narrow alleys climb at its upper neighborhoods. The small port of Gytheio is excellent, especially in the summer months, for a coffee or lunch almost on the sea, at one of the many stores on the seafront.
The small island Kranai adds another aspect to the landscape of the island, which is today connected to the land. At this island, according to tradition, Paris and Helen spent their first night, when she abandoned the palace of Menelaos, on their road to Troy. Paris, since he was in love, forgot his helmet there and thus came the name of the island. The beaches around Gytheio are numerous, with nice beautiful waters and no visitor will be disappointed.
