The Byzantine Museum of Chios is housed at the Ottoman Mecidiye Mosque, a building of the 19th century, which is located at Vounaki Square, at the centre of the city. Through its impressive exhibits it provides visitors with a review of the island’s history from the Early Christian years to the modern times. The visitor can admire Byzantine wall paintings from important monuments, such as Nea Moni and Panagia Krina, portable icons of the 16th-18th century, folk art works, sculptures from the 14th-16th century, period of the Genoese occupation of the island, as well as a copy of the famous painting by Delacroix “Massacre at Chios”
