Archaeological Sites & Historical Monuments
The “darkest” anniversary in the history of Kalavrita occurred on the 13th of December 1943, when the Nazi troops executed the entire male population over 14 years old and surrendered the city to flames. The hill of Kappis became the Site of Sacrifice of the tragic events that astound humanity. The large cross that stands there is to remind of this heinous crime. Also there is the statue of the Mother of Kalavrita which became the eternal symbol for the struggle and a bright example for dignity and heroism.
Each year at the sacred Site of Sacrifice they carry out a memorial service and various events in memory of the dead, on the anniversary of the destruction. Thousands are the visitors of the monument who come here to pay their respects to the victims of the German forces of Occupation.
