The Perama cave, a few kilometres from Ioannina is one of the largest and most impressive of Greece. It is 1100 metres long and was created 1.5 million years ago.
It was discovered by accident in 1940 under the Goritsa hill and since it was a rather turbulent period of time, initially the local population used it as a refuge. After the 1960s, when it was explored in its entirety by expert speleologists, it started to become a centre of ever increasing tourist attraction.
There are five main "halls" and several smaller ones. An impressive phenomenon is the one of the "Cross" where a stalagmite and a stalactite joined to create this shape, something rare to find in nature. The "Cloak of Persephone", the "Great Wall of China" and the "Lake with the lily pads" are only some of the extremely beautiful artifacts, which were carved by nature, time and water and can be admired there.
