It is not surprising that a city with such rich and evident presence of its Byzantine tradition has a very remarkable Byzantine Museum.
The Museum is housed at a modern building inside the Byzantine acropolis.
Its showcases have ecclesiastical manuscripts and vessels, icons, mosaics and woodworks from the 12th to the 17th century. Particularly the collection of the well-preserved Byzantine icons is considered among the most impressive and largest in Greece, even though most of them are not exhibited.
Among the most impressive relics of the collection are the icons of Prophet Elias of the 12th century, the icon of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) also of the 12th century, and the icon of Christ Pantocrator of the 14th century.
