Cave of the Dragon

A few metres from the banks of the lake of Kastoria, and almost next to the chapel of Agios Nikolaos (St Nicholas) of the Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa is the Cave of the Dragon. According to tradition, it took its name from a sleepless dragon, which guarded a goldmine there.

It is an impressive cave with excellent decoration from stalagmites and stalactites.

The labyrinthine cave includes five corridors, ten halls and seven underground lakes. Its temperature remains stable, independent of season, at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius.
They have discovered in the cave the bones from the impressive prehistoric bear of the caves, whose weight reached half a ton. The interventions in the interior of the cave of the dragon have been carried out in such a way as to ensure maximum safety for visitors and to maintain intact the natural environment of the cave.
