Veria in the Byzantine period was one of the most important cities of Macedonia. The rich Byzantine tradition of the city as well as its relations with other big cities of that period (Constantinople, Thessaloniki and others) are demonstrated through the interesting collections of the Byzantine Museum of Veria.
The museum is housed at a traditional industrial building in the beginning of the 20th century, which operated as a cylindrical flour mill and was later destroyed by a fire. The Ministry of Culture, recognizing the importance of the building, renovated it and made it into the Byzantine Museum. At its showcases are exhibited excellent exhibits from all the Byzantine periods and include icons, portable icons, coins, mosaic floors and others.
