Veria is the capital of the Prefecture of Imathia and nowadays has a population of approximately 75,000 people. Especially during the Byzantine Period it was an important urban centre of Macedonia and its multicultural character is still visible. Macedonians, Turks, Vlachs, people from Pontus, people Asia Minor and Thracians made at times a colorful mosaic of peoples and nationalities, which left a permanent mark on the urban web of Veroia.
The visitor can wander the narrow alleys of the Old City with the beautiful stone buildings and the traditional mansions, like the one of Sarafoglou, which nowadays houses the Folklore Museum of the city. Of special important is the Jewish community, “Barbouta”, with the elaborate mansions of the Jewish merchants, but also the simple houses of the people of toil. The Tribunal of Apostle Paul is the centre of the ecclesiastical history of the city and in any case you should not omit to visit it.
