Historic Temples
The Ionian style three-aisled basilica of Panagia Spileotissa is the Metropolitan Church of Corfu. It was constructed in the end of the 16th century at the location of an older church dedicated to Agios Vlassios.
In the church there is the icon of the Panagia Spileotissa, which was transferred here by the English after the destruction of an older church which was located at the New Fortress of Corfu. At the church there is also the holy relic of Agia Theodora inside a silver shrine.
The church is rather impressive due to its Renaissance elements that dominate its interior. Visitors can also admire the Byzantine screen as well as the interesting icons that date from the 14th, 15th and 16th century.
The church celebrates each year on August 15th and February 11th in memory of the martyr Vlassios and Agia Theodora.
