New Fortress of Corfu

The new Fortress of Corfu was erected by the Venetians in the 16th century. It is an impressive building, which dominates over the Old Port. From the New Fortress you can admire a panoramic view of the city and the open sea in front of it. The fortress gate is decorated with a relief lion of St Mark, which was the emblem of Venice and is present in every Venetian castle. Inside the fortress there is a remarkable church of Panagia Spilaiotissa.
