The Monastery of Panagia Platytera was founded in the end of the 18th century and is located about a kilometer from the historical centre of the city of Kerkyra. The Monastery of Panagia Platytera was torched in 1798 by the French.
The Monastery has a sacred icon of Virgin Mary, which was found miraculously. The cover and the casing of the icon were donated by the first Governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, when he served under the Czar in Russia. Given the relation of the Monastery with family of Kapodistrias, there are several members buried here, including himself. The Monastery of Panagia Platytera is also where they buried the hero of the Greek Revolution Fotos Tzavelas, the scholar and the representative of the Greek Enlightenment Andreas Moustoxidis and others.
The Monastery also possesses ecclesiastical relics and icons of great religious importance.
It is a cenobitic, men’s monastery with rich ecclesiastical and charitable activity.and it celebrates on August 15th.
