East of the old city of Corfu is the Old Fortress, known also as Fortezza.
It is truly an architectural masterpiece of Venetian fortification art. The fortress is connected to the rest of the island through a bridge, which is known as Contrafossa.
The fortress has two large towers, the so-called “Land Tower” and “Sea Tower”, which were built on two hilltops. From this came the Byzantine name of the city, which later, corrupted, became Corfu.
Inside the fortress there is also the Doric church of Agios Georgios.
