Historic Temples
At the centre of the village Chonikas or Neo Iraio at a distance of approximately 7 km from the city of Argos, is one of the most important Byzantine monuments of Argolis, the church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
It dates from the 12th century and belongs to the type of the complex cross-in-square church with a dome supported on four columns. On its eastern side there are three three-sided arches, and on the western there is a narthex and a bell tower.
Its walls step on a foundation with two steps and are built according to the Middle Byzantine cloisonné masonry. Only on the eastern side they are covered by marble revetment until their middle. On the northern, western and southern sides there are two stone crosses, a decorative element characteristic of the 12th century. The dome and the upper parts belong to later constructions stage.
