Tolo and ancient Assini

The beaches at the cosmopolitan Tolo do not need any recommendations. The village attracts a large number of visitors in the summer months and possesses all the modern tourist infrastructures. The green mountain slopes, the golden beaches with the thin sand and the three islands at the bay create a landscape, where one can really enjoy the Greek summer.

On the edge of the bay, on a hill are the ruins of ancient Assini, with its well preserved walls. The city is mentioned at the Homeric epics and its landscape has been praised by the Nobel prize winner poet George Seferis. Even though the walls date from the Hellenistic Period, the excavations that unearthed a Mycenaean necropolis at a nearby hill proved that the city was inhabited from a previous period. Right under the Acropolis of the ancient city is the very clean Kastraki beach.
