The gallery of Sparta is a department of the National Gallery and has the name of its founder, John Koumantaros, who came from Sparta. It is housed at one of the most beautiful neoclassical buildings of the city, which was donated by his children, George Koumantaros and Dolly Goulandris. Its permanent exhibition is also a donation of John Koumantaros and consists of fourteen oil paintings of the 16th – 20th century, works of the most important west European painters.
The gallery hosts temporary exhibitions with works from the rich collections of the National Gallery, as well as thematic exhibitions that present particular interest for the history of Sparta and Laconia.
