Archaeological site of Messon

The Sanctuary of Messon, of Ionic order, is locate at the area “Kokkala” of Agia Paraskevi in Lesvos and is one of the most important monuments of the island. From the ancient temple inly its basis survives.

Over the ancient floor an Early Christian cemetery basilica was founded and we can still see traces of it. Early Christian burials that were discovered at its area confirm that it was a “cemetery” one. The Early Christian basilica was replaced by the small church of the Middle Byzantine period, dedicated to Taxiarches Michael.
