Exploring the Upper Town
The Upper Town of Thessaloniki is situated at a privileged area from the Olympiados street until Eptapyrgio. It is the most traditional district, which maintains intact a lot of older elements, since it survived the great fire of 1917.
The streets are paved and the houses are characteristic of Balkan architecture, with intense influences from Europe, or the characteristic Ottoman ones, richly decorated. If you walk here, you travel to Thessaloniki as it was in previous centuries. You will encounter Byzantine churches, such as Agios Nikolaos Orphanos and the Monastery of Vlatadon, Ottoman springs, neoclassical buildings and traditional cafes, and you will enjoy the beautiful view to the Thermaic Gulf.
