The State Museum of Contemporary Art of Thessaloniki is one of the most special of its kind. It includes the famous Costakis Collection, with 1.275 works of representatives of the Russian Avant Garde, as well as a lot of works of painting and sculpture, made by Greek and foreign artists.
It is housed in a wing of the Moni Lazariston, at the area of Stavroupolis, while its temporary exhibitions are hosted at Warehouse Β1 at the port. The impressive complex of the Moni Lazariston was built in the 19th century by monks of the Order of St Vincent de Paul at times functioned as an orphanage, a religious school, a hospital and a centre for receiving refugees after the Asia Minor Catastrophe.
