Change of Guard - Monument of the Unknown Soldier
Exactly opposite the building of the Hellenic Parliament, at Amalias Avenue, is the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. It was erected in 1929-1930 and it is dedicated to all those who lost their lives fighting for Greece.
The monument is guarded 24 hours a day by the Presidential Guard, who wear the traditional uniform of the evzones, the most competent soldiers of the Greek army. Their uniform is the traditional costume of the 19th century, with the characteristic foustanella and tsarouhia . The change of guard takes place every hour daily, while the official change takes place every Sunday morning with a rather spectacular ritual.
