The impressive building of the City Hall dominates at the centre of Athens, in front of Kotzia square.
It was constructed in 1874 according to plans from Panagiotis Kalkos and belongs to an austere neo-classical order. Its interior is decorated with excellent works of well-known Greek painters, among which what stands out is the well-known oil painting of the 19th century which depicts Apostle Paul preaching to the Athenians the Christian religion.
Around the square one can see other impressive buildings, which today belong to the National Bank, where a lot of ancient tombs have been discovered there, as well as ceramic workshops, and a gate of the walls of the city.
