Archaeological Sites & Historical Monuments
The Ancient Agora of Athens, northwest of the Acropolis, was the heart of the operation of the democratic regime, the commercial, administrative and religious centre of the city. Throughout its area there were sanctuaries, buildings relevant to public administration and commercial stores, where Athenians gathered daily for shopping and discussing.
The area has been inhabited continuously from the Neolithic Period to the modern times, but the districts that were situated here until the beginning of the 20th century, Vrissaki and Vlassarou, were demolished in order to unearth the antiquities, and only a few later monuments still survive, for example the church of Agioi Apostoloi.
