One of the most special monuments of Athens is the first gas factory at Piraeus street, from which the whole surrounding area has been called Gazi (Gas).
It operated from 1857 up to 1983 and around it an autonomous industrial district has been created. The complex today belongs to the Municipality of Athens and has been transformed into an industrial museum and a cultural centre, the Technopolis, which hosts various events. The visitor can see the well preserved facilities with the chimneys, the huge boilers and the furnaces, to move mentally to other periods of time and to learn about the everyday life of the closed community that used to live here.
