Between the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora stands the rocky hill of Areopagus, the oldest court of ancient Athens, which dealt with cases of homicide and has been related to mythological traditions and important historical events.
Here, according to tradition, in 51 AD, Apostle Paul spoke for the first time about the Unknown God to the Athenians. One of those who followed his preaching was Dionysius the Aeropagite, later bishop and patron saint of the city, to whom they dedicated the church that stood in the 16th century on the top of the hill. Nowadays, every year, on the eve of the celebration of Apostle Paul they hold a vesper service.
