The first university of Greece was founded in 1837 and four years it was housed at a historical building at the district of Plaka, under the Acropolis, with a panoramic view to the surrounding area. It is the house of the architect Kleanthis, one of the most beautiful and oldest residencies in Athens, built at least from the 17th century. Nowadays, it housed the Museum of History of the University of Athens, which with its exhibits recreates not only the history of the educational institution but also the history of the sciences in modern times and of Greek society in general. Various cultural events are hosted here throughout the year.
