The museum, which belongs to the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece, is housed at the impressive neo-classical mansion of the Old Parliament, at Stadiou street, which was constructed in the second half of the 19th century and until 1935 housed the Greek Parliament.
Its exhibits cover the history of modern Greece from the period of the Turkish occupation until the present days, and record the liberating struggles of the Greeks and the creation of an independent state. Some of its collections are unique, like the personal items of the fighters of the Greek Revolution, among them the ones of Theodoros Kolokotronis, whose statue is at a dominant position in the square in front of the museum.
