One of the most important museums of its kind, it recreates the panorama of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine culture, through its 30,000 exhibits, which dates from the 3rd to the 20th century. It possesses rare collections with ecclesiastical items, wall paintings, mosaics, sculptures, ceramics, manuscripts and miniature works from all the territories of the Byzantine Empire and one of the richest collection of icons in the world.
It was founded in 1914 and is housed in Villa Ilissia, the winter residence of the Duchess of Plakentia, which was built in the middle of the 19th century. It hosts important temporary exhibitions and its areas of its picturesque yard there is a café-restaurant.
