The Numismatic Museum, one of the oldest in the country, is the only one of its kind in Greece and one of the very few in the world. It possesses more than 500,000 items, mainly coins, but also medals, weights, lead seals, signet rings, which cover almost the whole Greek history, from antiquity to the present day.
Since 1999 it has been housed at Iliou Melathron, one of the most beautiful neo-classical buildings of Athens, a true ornament of Panepistimiou Avenue. It was built in 1878-1879 according to the design of the German architect Ernst Ziller and was the residence of the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, who excavated Ilion, that is Troy. In its picturesque, cool garden there is a canteen.
